What Parents Learn in the Program

  • How their child communicates right now and the next steps to take
  • What motivates their child to communicate.
  • How to engage their child in back and forth conversations, even before he can talk.
  • How to turn everyday activities into opportunities for their child to learn language.

It Takes Two to Talk®
The Hanen Program® for Parents of Children with Language Delays

The program is for parents of children (birth to 5) who have language delays. It recognizes the importance of involving parents in their child’s early language intervention and the need to help children and families as early as possible!

Time Commitment

Parents attend ten 60 minute sessions with a Certified Hanen® Speech Pathologist, over a 10 week period (1 session per week).

When to Refer to a Speech Pathologist
By 2 years old, the child is not:

  • saying about 50 different words
  • combining 2 or more words together
  • does not seem to understand simple instructions or questions (for example, ‘Get your shoes,’ ‘Want a drink?’)

Prompt referrals could save the child from developing communication, social, behavioural, emotional and literacy difficulties later on!
